Our Safety Commitment

Safety Is Not
Negotiable.

At Mafate Business Enterprises, safety is a core operational priority — not a compliance checkbox. Every project we undertake, every site we operate on, and every employee we deploy is governed by the same non-negotiable standard: zero harm to people, equipment, and the environment.

We are committed to maintaining a safe, clean, and healthy working environment across all our divisions — including chrome mining, asphalt, readymix concrete, plant hire, and supply services. Our safety culture begins at management level and is enforced consistently down to every worker on site, every shift, every day.

Mafate operates in full compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). All site inductions, method statements, risk assessments, and safety files are prepared and maintained to the standard required by our clients and the law.

ZERO
Our Harm Target — Without Exception

Zero harm is the only acceptable outcome on any Mafate project site. This commitment applies to every employee, every subcontractor, every visitor — and to the communities and environments surrounding our operations.

How We Work Safely

Health & Safety Practices

Our health and safety framework is built on proven industry practices, enforced by qualified safety officers, and reviewed continuously to ensure our operations meet and exceed the standards required by law and by our clients.

01
Personal Protective Equipment
The use of appropriate PPE is mandatory on all Mafate sites without exception. Hard hats, high-visibility vests, safety boots, gloves, eye protection, and hearing protection are issued, enforced, and inspected daily before every shift begins.
02
Site Safety Compliance
All Mafate operations are governed by documented safety files, method statements, and risk assessments prepared in accordance with MHSA and OHSA requirements. Site rules are communicated at induction and enforced throughout the project lifecycle.
03
Ongoing Safety Training
Safety training is not a once-off event at Mafate. All employees receive regular safety inductions, toolbox talks, and competency refreshers. Training records are maintained and made available to principal contractors on request.
04
Hazard Identification & Reporting
All employees are trained to identify, report, and respond to workplace hazards. A structured hazard reporting system is in place on every site, and findings are actioned immediately and documented for review.
05
Daily Toolbox Talks
Every shift begins with a toolbox talk. These structured, site-specific safety briefings ensure all personnel are aware of daily hazards, task-specific risks, emergency procedures, and any site changes before work commences.
06
Incident Investigation & Reporting
All incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions are investigated, documented, and reported in accordance with MHSA and client requirements. Corrective actions are implemented immediately and tracked to closure.
Medical & Fitness Compliance

Certified Fit.
Every Worker.

Every Mafate employee undergoes routine medical examinations conducted by accredited occupational health practitioners before deployment on any mine or industrial site. No employee is placed on site without a current certificate of fitness.

Medical examinations are conducted in accordance with the Mine Health and Safety Act and specific client requirements. Certificates are maintained, renewed on schedule, and made available to site management and principal contractors.

Occupational Health Examinations
Conducted by accredited occupational health practitioners. Entry, periodic, and exit medicals completed as required by the MHSA and site-specific requirements.
Certificate of Fitness
All employees hold valid certificates of fitness. Records are tracked, renewed proactively, and submitted to principal contractors and mine management as required.
Continuous Monitoring
Employee health and fitness status is monitored throughout their tenure. Any change in health status is managed through our occupational health processes in line with legal requirements.
Risk Management

Identifying Risk.
Before It Strikes.

Mafate has qualified safety officers and structured risk management systems in place on all active project sites. Our approach to risk is proactive — we identify, assess, and mitigate hazards before they lead to incidents.

Risk assessments are conducted for every task type before work commences. These are reviewed regularly, updated when site conditions change, and communicated to all personnel through the toolbox talk programme.

Qualified Safety Officers
Dedicated, registered safety officers are appointed on all Mafate sites. They conduct inspections, manage safety files, investigate incidents, and ensure legal compliance throughout the project.
Task-Specific Risk Assessments
Written risk assessments are prepared for every task category. Risks are ranked, controls are assigned, and assessments are reviewed whenever conditions, tasks, or personnel change.
Continuous Safety Improvement
Safety performance is tracked, reviewed, and reported. Incident trends, near-miss data, and inspection findings drive continuous improvements to our safety systems and site practices.
Environmental Responsibility

Protecting the
Environment We Work In.

Mafate Business Enterprises recognises that mining and construction activities carry environmental responsibilities that extend beyond the site boundary. We are committed to conducting all operations in a manner that minimises environmental impact and protects the natural surroundings of every project we undertake.

Our environmental practices are embedded in our project planning, site management, and operational procedures. We comply with all applicable environmental legislation and the site-specific environmental management plans of our clients.

We actively monitor our operational footprint — from dust and noise management to waste disposal and contamination prevention — and take corrective action immediately when standards are not met.

Dust & Noise Control
Active dust suppression and noise management measures are implemented on all earthmoving and construction sites in line with environmental permit conditions and community commitments.
Waste Management
All waste generated on Mafate sites is segregated, stored securely, and disposed of through registered waste contractors in compliance with waste management legislation.
Spill Prevention & Response
Spill containment equipment is maintained on all plant hire and construction sites. Spill response procedures are documented, communicated to all personnel, and drilled regularly.
Legislative Compliance
All Mafate operations comply with the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) and site-specific environmental management plans. Environmental incidents are reported, investigated, and actioned without delay.
